Cameras see the aurora differently than your eyes do. A display that looks like a faint grey-green smudge to the naked eye can show up vividly green in a photo, because a long exposure collects far more light than your eye can in the instant you glance up. That gap is good news — it means you don't need rare, extreme conditions to get a real photo. You need the right settings, and a plan for the cold.
What you actually need
- Any camera with manual mode — a mirrorless or DSLR gives the most control, but a modern phone's dedicated night mode gets surprisingly close for a first attempt.
- A tripod. Non-negotiable. Anything longer than about a quarter-second exposure will blur if handheld.
- A wide-angle lens, if you have a choice — 14–24mm on a full-frame body (or the equivalent field of view) captures more sky and gathers more light per pixel than a zoom lens at a narrow aperture.
- A headlamp with a red-light mode, so you can see your dials without wrecking your night vision.
- Spare, warm batteries. Cold drains batteries fast — keep spares in an inside pocket, close to your body.
The four settings that matter
1. Shoot in RAW, not JPEG
RAW keeps far more shadow and color detail, which matters enormously when you're editing a dim, high-contrast night sky afterward. There's essentially no reason to shoot aurora in JPEG if your camera supports RAW.
2. Aperture: as wide as your lens allows
Set your f-stop to the lowest number available — f/2.8 or wider if you have it. A wider aperture lets in more light per second, which is the difference between a 5-second exposure and a 20-second one for the same brightness. At narrower apertures, a moving aurora simply blurs into a green haze before enough light accumulates.
3. Shutter speed: balance motion against brightness
This is the real trade-off of aurora photography. Longer exposures gather more light, but a fast-moving, rippling aurora will blur into a soft glow past a certain point, losing the structure that makes a photo striking rather than just a green sky.
When in doubt, start around 8 seconds, review the result on your camera's screen (zoomed in, not just the thumbnail), and adjust from there.
4. ISO: the number you tune last
Once aperture and shutter speed are set, use ISO to bring the overall exposure to the right brightness — typically somewhere between ISO 800 and ISO 3200 depending on how dark your sky actually is and how much noise your specific camera handles well. Take a test shot, check the histogram rather than just how it looks on a small screen, and adjust ISO up or down from there.
Focus is where most first attempts fail
Autofocus almost never works in near-total darkness — the camera has nothing to lock onto. Instead:
- Switch the lens to manual focus.
- In live view, point at the brightest star or a distant light and zoom in digitally on the screen.
- Turn the focus ring slowly until that point of light is as small and sharp as possible — this is effectively focusing at infinity.
- Tape the focus ring in place if your lens tends to drift, so an accidental bump doesn't cost you the rest of the night.
What your phone can do without any of this
Modern phone night modes automate a rough version of the same process — a longer exposure, elevated ISO, and multi-frame stacking to reduce noise — and can produce a genuinely usable photo of a moderate-to-strong display. It's a fine way to capture a memory in the moment; it just won't match a wide, fast lens and a manually tuned exposure once the display gets faint or fast-moving.
